How to Read Sheet Music Book Previews Before Buying

Check five things in a preview: notation format, key, rhythm, left-hand writing and readability. Remember that a sample list is not the full contents.

Start with the notation format, not page count

More pages do not necessarily mean more songs or a better fit. Pages may contain instructions, exercises or longer pieces. Check whether the notation is melody and chords, two-hand piano or something else you need.

Assess difficulty in several ways

Inspect the key signature, range, rhythms and left-hand patterns. Count and play a short sample slowly. One unfamiliar element may be manageable; if nearly everything is new, ask a teacher or choose an earlier step.

Test your actual reading setup

View the preview on your intended tablet or consider the reading distance at your piano. Zoom to inspect clarity, but remember that a preview image is not the full purchased book file.

Ask a precise question before ordering

For a particular song, send both the song title and book title. For a notation question, identify the preview page. Suggested levels reflect samples, not a certification of every piece or an exam grade. Sample contents are not a complete table of contents.

A common question

Does one sample song mean the book has only one song?

No. Sample contents identify only what appears in the previews. Ask for the contents if you need a complete list.
