Choose a goal before a book
For reading practice, look for short pieces and repeated left-hand patterns. For a favourite song, choose an arrangement that keeps a recognisable melody without too much complexity. You do not need the version closest to the recording.
Test the preview at the piano
Choose four to eight bars and try counting and playing each hand slowly. Notice whether almost every note is unfamiliar. If new rhythms, wide chords and hand-position changes all arrive together, consider an easier book or ask a teacher.
Where to start in our catalog
Compare the previews of The First Song and 12 Easy Piano Christmas Songs as starting points. Piano Fitness focuses on exercises. These books serve different purposes, so choose by your goal and inspect each sample. Our suggested levels reflect preview pages, not examination grades.
Choose a format you will actually use
If you practise with a tablet, an eBook may suit you. If you prefer pencil notes and a physical music stand, consider print. Check the formats actually offered: some titles are eBook only.
A common question
Should I buy a harder book to grow into?
It can work with a teacher’s plan, but your first self-practice book should include material you can start now and use to track progress.
